Vein Ablation, Microphlebectomy & Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins can lead to a variety of medical problems. They can rupture and bleed, develop nonhealing sores and infections, create skin problems, and commonly are associated with swelling in lower legs and physically limiting edema.

Vein ablation, phlebectomy, sclerotherapy, and VenaSeal are all procedures we offer to treat varicose veins:

  • Ablation closes varicose veins using heat, either using radiofrequency energy or lasers. Alternatively sealing off the vein with a simple injection of a medical adhesive.
  • Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive type of surgical removal, usually reserved for larger, bulging veins.
  • Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical into the vein to seal it shut. The vein eventually fades. This technique is optimal for spider veins and varicose veins in the hands and legs.
  • VenaSeal is a minimally invasive procedure in which a medical adhesive is injected into the affected vein. The adhesive causes the vessel walls to stick together, closing off the vein.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein deep in the body, most commonly the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis. This is a serious health concern because the clot can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Medication is the first line of defense against DVT: either blood thinners or, in cases where a clot is very large, drugs called thrombolytics, also known as “clot busters.” For those who don’t tolerate blood thinners well, there is a catheter-based procedure in which the interventional radiologist positions an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter in the vein to catch blood clots before they can travel to the lungs and heart.

Chronic wounds and ulcers require a comprehensive team approach to care, possibly involving cardiologists, vascular surgeons, endocrinologists, plastic surgeons, specialized nurses, and wound care technicians. Cardiovascular diseases, especially peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and high blood pressure, are significant risk factors for impaired wound healing. If circulation is impaired, the wound site may not be getting enough oxygen and nutrients to heal well. This can lead to painful chronic ulcers and tissue damage. Our specialists can perform tests to detect blockages, contribute to a patient’s personal treatment plan for healing and prevention, and work with wound care specialists to prevent arterial blockages that may result in amputation.
