Vascular Testing

Vascular testing refers to diagnostic procedures used to identify problems with circulation and blood flow in the arteries and veins, such as blockages, clots, or damage to the vessels themselves. These tests help diagnose and monitor conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and aneurysms.

While not all vascular testing uses ultrasound, the common, noninvasive tests described below do. During the ultrasound, which can be performed in our offices, a technician applies a gel to the area to be visualized, such as your neck to image the carotid arteries, or your belly to image your abdominal aorta. The technician then wands the area with a small handheld device called a transducer. The transducer emits sound waves that echo off the blood vessel being studied and transmits these echoes to a computer, where they are converted into images.

Aortic Ultrasound is used to image the aorta, the main artery carrying blood away from the heart. The procedure enables cardiologists to assess blood flow and the size and structure of the aorta. An aortic ultrasound may be recommended to:

  • Screen for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), areas where the aorta bulges or weakens, especially in males 55 or older, who are current or former smokers, or there is a family history aortic aneurysm.
  • Monitor the size and growth of an existing AAA
  • Look for the cause of abdominal or back pain.
  • Assess other conditions affecting the abdominal aorta

Carotid Ultrasound is used to evaluate the health of the carotid arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.  A carotid ultrasound can:

  • Detect narrowing or blockages in the carotid arteries.
  • Look for stenosis, or narrowing of the arteries, which can increase stroke risk.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of ongoing treatments for carotid artery disease.
  • Uncover blood clots or other abnormalities.

Renal/Mesenteric Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test used to evaluate the renal and mesenteric arteries. This type of ultrasound helps assess blood flow, detect blockages, and identify vascular abnormalities. A renal ultrasound is used to check for conditions such as renal artery stenosis, a narrowing of the arteries to the kidneys. A mesenteric ultrasound helps identify mesenteric artery stenosis or obstruction.

These imaging tests are used to evaluate blood flow in the arms and legs.

  • Upper Extremity Arterial Ultrasound is used to assess blood flow and detect blockages, aneurysms, and narrowing of the arteries in the arms.
  • Upper Extremity Venous Ultrasound evaluates the arm veins for issues such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or venous insufficiency.
  • Lower Extremity Arterial Ultrasound is used to detect blockages or narrowing in the leg arteries, often related to peripheral artery disease (PAD).
